Rental Scams in Germany: How to Spot and Avoid Them
Most landlords and agents are honest. But online, especially in big cities, scams exist. Here’s how to protect yourself.
Common scam patterns
Landlord says they’re abroad and can’t show the flat
They ask for deposit or first rent via bank transfer or money service before viewing
Listing photos look like they’re from a luxury magazine, but the rent is incredibly low
Communication feels rushed and pushy
Rules to stay safe
Never pay deposit or rent before you have:
Seen the flat in person (or through a trusted contact)
Signed a proper rental contract
Avoid payment methods that are hard to trace or reverse
Check if the same photos appear in multiple suspicious listings online
Be extra careful with private ads in very popular areas with “too good to be true” prices
What to do if you suspect a scam
Stop communication and report the listing on the platform
If you already sent money, contact your bank and local police immediately
Keep all emails, messages and receipts as evidence
