Rental Scams in Germany: How to Spot and Avoid Them

Most landlords and agents are honest. But online, especially in big cities, scams exist. Here’s how to protect yourself.

Common scam patterns

  • Landlord says they’re abroad and can’t show the flat

  • They ask for deposit or first rent via bank transfer or money service before viewing

  • Listing photos look like they’re from a luxury magazine, but the rent is incredibly low

  • Communication feels rushed and pushy

Rules to stay safe

  • Never pay deposit or rent before you have:

    • Seen the flat in person (or through a trusted contact)

    • Signed a proper rental contract

  • Avoid payment methods that are hard to trace or reverse

  • Check if the same photos appear in multiple suspicious listings online

  • Be extra careful with private ads in very popular areas with “too good to be true” prices

What to do if you suspect a scam

  • Stop communication and report the listing on the platform

  • If you already sent money, contact your bank and local police immediately

  • Keep all emails, messages and receipts as evidence
