Moving-In Checklist for Renters in Germany

Move-in day can be chaotic. Use this checklist to avoid missing important steps that could cost you money later.

Before move-in day

  • Confirm handover date and time with landlord

  • Ensure deposit and first rent payment are arranged

  • Arrange electricity contract (if needed)

  • Book moving help (friends or movers)

  • Prepare basic tools and cleaning supplies


At the handover

  • Read and record:

    • Electricity meter

    • Heating meter (if accessible)

    • Water meter

  • Check:

    • Doors and windows (close, lock properly)

    • Heating works in all rooms

    • Hot water in kitchen and bathroom

    • Any visible damage (walls, floors, tiles, appliances)

Write everything into a handover protocol, signed by both you and the landlord.


First week in the flat

  • Register your address (Anmeldung) at the local Bürgeramt

  • Set up internet/phone

  • Arrange contents or liability insurance if you want it

  • Introduce yourself briefly to neighbors if you feel comfortable


First months

  • Keep all rent payment confirmations

  • Scan and save copies of your contract and handover protocol

  • Create a simple folder (digital or physical) for:

    • Contract

    • Emails with landlord

    • Bills and Nebenkosten statements
