One of the first and most important tasks after moving to Germany is completing your Anmeldung, or address registration. Without it, you can’t open a bank account, get a tax ID, or receive essential documents. Here’s everything you need to know to complete the process smoothly.
1. What Is the Anmeldung?
The Anmeldung is the official registration of your home address with the local Bürgeramt (citizen office).Everyone living in Germany must complete it within 14 days of moving in.
2. Documents You Need
Bring these to your appointment:
Passport or ID
Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (form from your landlord)
Rental contract (sometimes required)
Completed registration form
Marriage or birth certificates (for families)
Without the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, you cannot register.
3. How to Book an Appointment
Appointments (Termine) can be hard to find in big cities. Tips:
Check the Bürgeramt website early morning
Reload the appointments page often
Be flexible with locations
Some cities allow walk-ins on specific days or appointment booking by phone.
4. What Happens During the Appointment?
It’s usually quick:
Submit your documents
Confirm your information
Receive a stamped confirmation
Your Meldebescheinigung (registration certificate) is issued immediately
Keep this document safe because you'll need to use it for other registrations.
5. Why the Anmeldung Matters
You’ll need it for:
Bank accounts
Job applications
Health insurance
School registration
Tax ID
Mobile contracts
Anmeldung is a foundational part of settling in Germany.
The Anmeldung may seem complicated, but once you understand the required documents and how the process works, it becomes straightforward. Completing it early will make the rest of your relocation much easier.
